Michael Hussey, Bravo, Saha to stay in Super Kings

The Chennai Super Kings selected up three players, Michael Hussey (Australia), Dwayne Bravo (West Indies) and India wicket-keeper Wriddhiman Saha at the 2011 Indian Premier League player auction here on Saturday. The bidding is set to conclude on Sunday.

Hussey, the star Aussie middle-order batsman, thus remains with the Super Kings while the dapper Saha, who also keeps wickets, is a new signing as also the Caribbean all-rounder Bravo.

The Super Kings made a successful bid for Hussey for 425,000 US Dollars while Saha came in with a price tag of USD 100,000 and Bravo was picked up for 200,000 as there were no other bidders.

The 2010 IPL and Champions League champions are still left with over three Million US dollars in their budget for the auction that will continue through this evening.

It may be recalled that the Super Kings retained four players from their winning squad, including skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Suresh Raina, Murali Vijay and South African all-rounder Albie Morkel.

Harbhajan Singh and Andrew Symonds to play for Mumbai Indians

Jan.08 (GMM) They were bitter rivals in the Sydney racial row three years ago but Harbhajan Singh and Andrew Symonds will play for the same team in IPL IV after Mumbai Indians bought the former Australian all-rounder in the players' auction here on Saturday.

After already retaining temperamental off-spinner Harbhajan for the fourth season of the Twenty20 league starting April 8, Mumbai Indians today bought Symonds for USD 850,000.

Harbhajan and Symonds were involved in the "Monkeygate" incident in 2008 when India made a Test tour of Australia but today's signing means the two volatile players will share the same dressing room in IPL IV.

Symonds had then accused Harbhajan of calling him a "monkey" which led to International Cricket Council banning the Indian off-spinner for three matches which was later overturned after an appeal.

The ICC's move did not go down well with Symonds, who is dubbed as the bad boy of Australian cricket for his drinking binges. The incident also led to bad blood between the players of both the teams.

Symonds played for the Deccan Chargers in the first three editions of the IPL and was also part of the team that won the title in 2009.

Harbhajan, on the other hand, have been representing Mumbai Indians under Sachin Tendulkar's captaincy since the league's inaugural edition in 2008.

Michael Bevan named Kings XI Punjab coach

Jan.08 (GMM) The Australian Cricket expert Michael Bevan, has been selected coach of Kings XI Punjab for the fourth edition of the IPL. Bevan replaces fellow Australian Tom Moody in the job and takes charge of a team whose participation in the tournament was in question until very recently, following its termination by the IPL in October. Punjab was given a lifeline in December when the Bombay High Court stayed the expulsion in December, and its participation in IPL 4 was all but confirmed on Wednesday.

Bevan, 40, was the mainstay of Australia's middle order and part of the World Cup winning teams in 1999 and 2003. Following his retirement, he also had a brief stint in the unauthorised Indian Cricket League. "The immediate focus of course is on getting the right pool of talent in the upcoming auctions in Bangalore," Bevan was quoted as saying in a release issued by the franchise.

"I have been following IPL since the first season, and now thanks to my new role as coach of Kings XI Punjab, I am part of this enthralling cricket tournament. I love this game and I am quite excited to coach a team that is driven by the same passion... my boys and I promise to deliver some great cricketing moments this season of IPL."

Punjab finished at the bottom of the league last year, losing 10 out of their 14 games. The auctions will be held in Bangalore on January 8 and 9.

IPL Bidding 2011: 10 bidders, 350 players, 16 hrs, $75 mn

Jan.08 (GMM) The topic of 16 hours extend over two days from Saturday morning, $75 million (Rs 3.3 billion) will be coughed up by some of India's rich and famous to buy world's best cricketing stars for the fourth edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

The 2011 edition of the IPL will see 74 matches with ten teams and some of the hardest hitters and greatest bowlers in action. The team owners make money from gate collection at the stadium, from advertisement, from selling team memorabilia. Many run websites too to build dedicated fan base and sell items, from T-shirts to cricket gear with the team logo embossed.

From a five-day Test with a rest day in between, cricket has grown in popularity exponentially with introduction of the one-day format.

None expected the game will reach dizzying heights by becoming even shorter. The IPL, which started off with a bombastic title of 'Chairman and Commissioner' for the man heading it three years ago, Lalit Modi, has not only done that. It has come to stay and is spreading to other cricketing countries as well with some already boasting of their version of Twenty20.

For two days from Saturday, the ITC Royal Gardenia in the heart of the IT hub will be the scene of both, action and auction.

A portly, flamboyant Vijay Mallya, a liquor to airlines honcho, dimpled Preity Zinta, the lissome Shilpa Shetty, the diminutive Gayathri Reddy and Nita Ambani, another portly honcho N Srinivasan and above all the 'King of Bollywood' Shah Rukh Khan or their representatives will be bidding for their best bets.

Far away in London or somewhere in England will be the 'Chairman and Commissioner' of the first three IPL editions Modi, now more busy battling various charges against him than strutting around the auction venue, like a larger than life figure he did in the past.

He may well see it live on TV channels, perhaps with a wry smile that the auction is without him. Only he had the charisma to keep the bidders and viewers on the edge of their seats, like in an actual T20 game at the stadium.

IPL auction Yusuf Pathan is the sports star value

Jan.08 (GMM) Members of the Indian cricket team are keeping an eye on the proceedings of the Indian Premier League auction where 353 players will go under the hammer in Bangalore today. The high-profile two-day auction for the fourth edition of the IPL will feature many Indian players and it has kept the cricketers glued to the news emerging back home.

The highly successful tournament is set to feature 10 teams and a whopping 74 matches this season starting April 8 and many players feel the addition of the two new franchises would make the auction a tricky affair.

"Because of additional two teams things have become tricky. Even otherwise very few players from the core Indian players group are available for auction," said a player.

"I believe player like Yusuf Pathan are going to be the main draw during this year's IPL auction. Forming team is going to be difficult this time around," he added.

Another senior Team India player said they have already chalked out their plan for the auction and would look for two overseas players.

"We have retained more than one player so for us our core group is ready. We will gun for two more classy overseas players and then have to concentrate on local players. We are sure that we can manage with whatever funds we have in our hand," he said.

"If teams have not retained any player then they have power of purse at their disposal," said the player, who was surprisingly released by his franchise.

Anil Kumble withdrawn out of IPL deal

Jan.07 (GMM) Former Indian Leg Spinner Anil Kumble, who also captained Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), has withdrawn from this weekend's IPL auction, citing business and other commitments. The decision appears to have brought the curtains down on Kumble's playing career though he remains involved in the game's administration at the highest levels.

"It's a tough call but I had lots of things I had committed to," he told ESPNcricinfo. "I had a company to run, I wanted to be involved in other things. At some point of time you have to take a call and move on."

Kumble - who had a reserve price of US$400,000, the maximum possible, for the upcoming IPL auction - will remain associated with the Bangalore franchise as its Chief Mentor. He will be a part of the RCB's senior leadership team over the next three years. "As long as you're playing, you can't really start focussing on other things that you want to do ... It's not easy but it's a step you need to take and that's what has happened."

He retired from international cricket in 2008, and remains India's leading wicket-taker in Tests (619) and one-dayers (337). In November 2010, Kumble won the election to become president of the Karnataka State Cricket Association, and had earlier been appointed chairman of the National Cricket Academy, based in Bangalore. He is also the vice-chairman of the state's wildlife board.

In the IPL, Bangalore had a forgettable inaugural season under Rahul Dravid, and started poorly in 2009 with Kevin Pietersen at the helm. Kumble took over as leader midway through that season and helped turn round Bangalore's form, taking them to the final, and also captained them to the semi-finals last year. He was among the most effective bowlers in the previous two seasons, taking 17 wickets with an economy of 6.42 in 2010, and 21 at an economy of 5.86 in 2009.

The IPL's chief operating officer Sundar Raman tweeted that Kumble's absence would be felt. "Jumbo [Kumble's nickname] will be missed in IPL. Been an inspiration for many youngsters."
